Neighborhood Initiative Programs
The Neighborhood Initiative strives to meet the outlined objectives of improved educational outcomes, strong parent engagement and progressing community development through a variety of collaborative programs serving children, youth and their parents. Our programs work in partnership with each other to provide comprehensive support and promising opportunities for all of our neighborhood families.
The Neighborhood Initiative serves the children, youth and families in the McPherson and Phillips neighborhoods by providing safe and trusting places that promote and support social connections, family wellness, parent engagement and adult education opportunities.
MYLA - Elementary School Leadership Academy
Engaging 4th and 5th graders in projects that promote leadership skills.
LIFE (Leading Into Future Education) Middle School Leadership Academy
Engaging 6th, 7th and 8th graders in projects that promote civic engagement and leadership skills at an early age. LIFE after-school programming makes available a wide range of positive opportunities to middle school-aged youth from the McPherson Neighborhood.
LAYLA (Leadership Academy Youth Leaders in Action) High School Leadership Academy
Designed to prepare 9th, 10th, 11th & 12th graders to excel academically, strengthen their 21st Century Skills and raise up our next generation of leaders. The LAYLA students are truly the architects of the McPherson Neighborhood Leadership Center and Democracy Zone.
FAMILY RESOURCE CENTER (FRC)
The FRC partners with families and community to create opportunities for learning, advocacy, social connections, well-being, and community leadership so that individuals have the resources to realize their strengths and determine and shape their own futures.
Volunteer Income Tax Preparation (VITA)
VITA tax sites provide free income tax preparation assistance to individuals and families with a household income of approximately $53,000 a year or less.
The FRC provides Medi-Cal application support and covered services access.
Volunteering and Internships
The goal of Napa Valley Parent University is to provide parents with the tools and knowledge necessary to become more involved in their children’s education, at school and in the community. All of our classes are offered bilingually, in English and Spanish, in the morning and evening.
Citizenship Legal Services
Citizenship Legal Services helps legal permanent residents become U.S. Citizens at a low cost. We provide free citizenship classes and tutoring.

All of our classes are offered bilingually, in English and Spanish, in the morning and evening. Classes are free and childcare is provided for all classes.
Access to unemployment benefits and affordable housing helps McPherson families improve their financial status and lower their monthly financial stress.
Community Projects and Initiatives
McPherson Neighborhood Community and Family Gardens
The McPherson Neighborhood gardens allow students and families the opportunity to grow fresh fruit and vegetables, spend time together learning about healthy food choices, cook economically, socialize, share a meal, or volunteer. The gardens are available to families and community members year-round and are bustling with action at any given time.
Leadership Academy youth provide targeted literacy tutoring to young children.
